Understanding the Observer Effect and How To Leverage its Benefits

Time: 1 hour, 24 minutes

Allison King, M.S., BCBA

This course explores how one’s performance on a given task can be improved by observing someone else perform that same task—a phenomenon called the observer effect. The observer effect has many applied benefits for behavior analysts and practitioners in the areas of behavioral science, training and development and leadership development. The course includes a brief review of historical observational learning research and a comprehensive analysis of recent applied research on the observer effect. The course concludes with techniques for using the observer effect to make a positive impact on various clinical and organizational applications of behavior analysis.

  • Describe how the observer effect is relevant to behavior analysis in terms of radical behaviorism’s scientific assumptions.
  • Identify the main findings from historical observational learning research.
  • Explain the outcomes from applications of the observer effect to improving client outcomes, employees’ safety-related behaviors and patient satisfaction.
  • List examples of how the observer effect can be used in practice to improve client outcomes, employee performance and supervisory skills.
